Speak Out for FCCLA

Written by Georgia Stark

What is FCCLA?

FCCLA which stands for Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America, is a student organization that prioritizes personal growth and developing leadership skills through Family and Consumer Science education. When competing with FCCLA we are developing skills such as creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, career preparation, and practical knowledge.

How has FCCLA affected me?

Throughout my time at Grant, I’ve been able to attend fall leadership trainings which have helped me grow my communication skills and creativity. I’ve been given multiple opportunities through FCCLA such as becoming a chapter leader, working to run for state office, and competing. I have been able to work on my leadership skills greatly as well as my teamwork skills. I’ve been able to grow my relationships throughout my chapter and plan fun activities for us to do together. Competing with FCCLA has helped me work on my time management skills as well as

As a freshman in the Culinary Arts program at Grant Career Center, I have been actively involved in my FCCLA chapter. Early in the school year I was chosen to serve as an FCCLA officer. Our FCCLA officers visited Camp NuHop in October for an opportunity to grow our leadership skills and bond as a team. We did lots of fun activities such as a ropes course, a bonfire, made cards for sick kids, and learned a lot more about FCCLA. As a class we worked with one of our staff members, Ron Dunn, who gives back to the community through a nationwide organization, Lasagna Love. Between our first- and second-year culinary students we prepared and delivered 20 lasagnas this past fall! In February, I organized a card party to make cards for residents at The Glenn in Eastgate. In a few weeks culinary students will be showcasing their skills and knowledge through a variety of projects at FCCLA regionals hosted at Mid East Career Center in Zanesville, Ohio. We have students competing in Career Investigation, Food Innovations, Hospitality Tourism and Recreation, Sports Nutrition, and Sustainability.

My experiences with FCCLA so far have been wonderful and I am very excited to continue learning more about this organization and the opportunities that come with it. My Food Innovations project has allowed me to showcase creativity, learn about flavor pairing between fruits and herbs, nutrition, costing, and marketing. I will be the first student at Grant Career Center in FCCLA to apply for Executive Council for an opportunity to grow as a leader and represent region three for FCCLA and Grant Career Center.
