The 2022 August flooding event in Hazard, Kentucky left a lasting mark on the community, as homes were submerged, streets were inundated, and lives were disrupted. The deluge of water brought about by the flooding wreaked havoc, displacing families and causing extensive damage to properties and infrastructure. Despite the passage of time, the repercussions of this natural disaster continue to be felt by Hazard residents, highlighting the ongoing need for support and assistance.
Last year, students and staff from Grant Career Center rallied together to provide aid to the struggling community. Through a community dinner, distribution of essential supplies, and hands-on restoration work, they extended a helping hand to those in need, embodying the spirit of service and compassion. Now, two years later, the commitment to supporting Hazard remains unwavering.
In continuation of their efforts, this year's service learning trip sees Grant students and staff returning to Hazard with renewed dedication. Their itinerary includes hosting a community picnic to foster camaraderie and uplift spirits, as well as distributing supplies to those still grappling with the aftermath of the flood. Additionally, they will be collaborating with a local church to repair and restore a vital structure, which will serve as a hub for out-of-town community groups coming to assist with the ongoing restoration efforts.
The "Grant Give Back" initiative exemplifies the power of collective action and the profound impact that can be achieved through acts of kindness and solidarity. As Hazard, Kentucky continues to rebuild and recover, the support provided by Grant Career Center serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating the enduring strength of community bonds and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
